As Sierra Leone Presidential and Parliamentary elections draw near, globally accredited news agency Voice Of America (VOA) yesterday concluded a three day training on best media practices in covering elections at Hub, Wilberforce. Training facilitator, Joan Mower, said, “the training was for VOA partners to provide them with some ideas and information about covering elections and to work with them to be stronger VOA partners…”
She further added that the training would also help journalists to focus on issues such as the platform of the parties and how to produce fact-based news for the public. Noting that it would guide journalists not to let any political parties dictate the terms of the election coverage.
The President of Women In the Media Sierra Leone (WIMSAL), Tiana Alpha, was one of the participants. She said, “the training was timely and educative.” She added, “we got more information on the need for media practitioners to be objective, accurate and prepared.” However, Tiana noted, “the training reminded us that the citizens matter most.”
12 local broadcast journalists from both rural and urban areas were trained for three days on different topics ranging from the role of fact base journalism, the future of news, investigative journalism and social media trends; it challenges and accelerating evolution.
