Sixteen firefighters battle Murupara house fire

Sixteen firefighters have managed to tame what was an out-of-control house fire in Murupara.

Emergency services were called to the unoccupied house on Tawa St just after 5.30pm on Sunday.

One Murupara resident who did not want to be named said the fire was "huge" and took firefighters over an hour to contain.

"Smoke is still billowing from the house and spreading across other streets," he said.

"No one is living at the house."

Northern communications shift manager Paul Radden said three fire trucks were called in from Rotorua and Murupara to douse the blaze.

"Approximately 16 firefighters are in attendance. The fire has been extinguished and they are now dampening down hotspots."

Radden said a substantial part of the house was damaged by the fire.
