Schools safe following sighting of man with a knife

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after he was seen carrying a knife in Stoke, Nelson. 

Police located the teenager in the Stoke area around 10.45am and arrested him for possession of an offensive weapon.

The matter will be referred to youth aid. 

Police received a call at 9.20am on Thursday morning that a person was in the Neale Ave area, Stoke, carrying a large knife.

Members of the public were told to be on the lookout for a Maori man wearing one white and one black gumboot, black hoodie, black cap, and long shorts carrying a large knife.

The incident prompted police to ask schools in the area to keep their students inside as a precaution.

At least two schools, Nayland College and Broadgreen Intermediate, were affected. 

However, all schools have now resumed regular operation.

Police have thanked schools for their quick actions and cooperation.
