State Highway 1 has reopened after an elderly woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in South Canterbury on Wednesday afternoon.
The 80-year-old was critically injured in the crash, which happened at about 2.35pm near Temuka.
The woman and her male passenger were transported by ambulance to Timaru Hospital's Emergency Department. The woman later died from her injuries, Sergeant Mike van der Heyden said.
Van der Heyden was unsure of the extent of the passenger's injuries.
It appeared the car was parked to the side of the northbound lane of the highway, about 100 metres south of where it met Arowhenua Rd, before the crash, he said.
It was understood the car pulled onto the road, colliding with a northbound van.
The van driver was not injured.
The serious crash investigation unit was continuing to investigate the crash.
Traffic was down to one lane on SH1 during the afternoon and the road reopened just after 8.30pm.
