A Jetstar flight from Wellington circled Nelson in the air for two hours as fog closed in on the airport.
The flight left Wellington shortly at 3.54pm, and was scheduled to land in Nelson about 30 minutes later.
However at 6.30pm the flight was still in the air, but heading back to Wellington. Up until that point, the pilot had been circling Nelson, hoping for the fog to clear.

Earlier on Monday, fog led to flights being cancelled at Nelson Airport. The Jetstar flight had been circling for two hours, but the fog was too low for them to land.
"We're open, but it's up to the pilots. It is what it is, it's unfortunate, but it happens at this time of year."
It had lifted a bit for a few hours mid-day, but covered the city again in the afternoon.
Numerous flights out of Blenheim had been cancelled on Monday.
One passenger, who did not want to be named, was due to fly to Auckland from Nelson on a Jetstar flight so that she could attend a funeral. She had travelled from Blenheim to catch the flight.
The flight, which was due to leave at 5.05pm was cancelled, however when she contacted Jetstar she said she was told there had been no cancellations.
The woman said she had managed to get a seat on an Air New Zealand shuttle back to Blenheim.
Jetstar has been contacted for comment.
According to Nelson Airport's website, a departing Air New Zealand flight to Wellington at 5pm was cancelled, as well as an Air New Zealand flight leaving for Christchurch at 6:10pm and another departing to Auckland at 6:35pm.
Arriving Air New Zealand flights from Christchurch at 5:05pm and from Auckland at 5:40pm were cancelled and some other flights were delayed.
Some flights earlier in the day were cancelled as well, including three Air New Zealand flights to Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland between 12.30pm and 1.10pm.
The MetService weather forecast said fine spells were increasing on Monday afternoon with southwest winds.
