…As PDP accuses gov of frustrating LG chiefs

AKURE—THE crisis of leadership in the Ondo State House of Assembly worsened over the weekend, as Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, allegedly recognised the Malachi Coker-led faction of the assembly.
This came as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ondo State accused the governor of frustrating local government chairmen in the state from discharging their constitutional responsibilities.
The Ondo assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis for over two months now, when a faction led by Malachi Coker sacked the principal officers of the house led by the Speaker, Jumoke Akindele.
The crisis led to the sealing of the assembly by the state police command.
Governor Akeredolu came under fire weekend when he tactically recognised the Malachi faction at the swearing in of the State Secretary to Government, SSG, and his Chief of Staff.
Malachi was offered a seat beside the governor during the ceremony which drew the ire of the other faction.
In a statement yesterday, spokesman of the Akindele faction, Siji Akindiose described the action of the governor as an “endorsement of illegality.”
Meanwhile, the PDP in the state has urged the governor to allow local governments to be administered by the chairmen elected to discharge the responsibility.
In a statement, the party’s Director of Publicity, Ayo Fadaka said: “It is our firm conviction that there are direct challenges that compel the immediate attention of the governor, which he must dedicate time to solve in our health, education and infrastructural sectors rather than to zero in on actions calculated to frustrate the local governments.”
Reacting, the Deputy Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ade Adetimehin said the governor had done nothing wrong with the administration of local government.
Adetimehin said: “PDP was just raising unnecessary alarm. Akeredolu is Senior Advocate and would not do anything that is against the rule of law. They think he would dissolve the local government and he had not done so.”
